 Kaiseki at Ushabu
    2173 Professor Ave., 216-713-1741

Most of us are familiar with Ushabu's pitch-perfect shabu-shabu experience, but did you know that this tiny Tremont izakaya also offers a Michelin star-worthy tasting menu? Chef Matthew Spinner's seven- and 13-course rides are hyper-seasonal expressions of culinary craft and ingenuity borne of Japanese techniques and tradition.

Now Open: Polpetta
19900 Detroit Rd, Rocky River, 216-860-4474

At first blush, Rocky River's Polpetta appears to be yet another interpretation of the B-Y-O trope. Replace tacos, burritos, hot dogs or poke bowls with meatballs and you pretty much know the drill. Or so we presumed. Sure, the format feels familiar, with guests charting a course by selecting from a catalogue of balls, sauces and sides. But in the hands of talented chef-owners — as opposed to, say, a lab-coated corporate culinary specialist in another state — the results can be staggeringly good.

    2393 Professor Ave, (216) 298-4400
Choice quote: “I saw the pretty photos posted and wanted to experience the atmosphere. Unfortunately, we were not there on a weekend and the upstairs was closed. We were seated on the patio and our server was terrific. My salmon dish was quite good, and my husband enjoyed his jambalaya. The Tremont area looked cool and trendy, but we didn't spend any time after dinner.” - Anna H.

 Fahrenheit
    2417 Professor Ave., Cleveland

Chef Rocco Whalen's perennially hot Tremont restaurant just keeps turning up the heat on new American edibles. Fahrenheit is one of the reasons that this neighborhood has achieved such an elevated status among foodies near and far. Cleveland Nachos, chorizo stuffed dates and Kobe beef short ribs are just three of the many perfect dishes at one of the consistently best restaurants in town.

 Funhouse
    1539 W. 117th St. | (216) 815-5866

This place doesn’t have many food options, but it makes up for it with its extensive bar (that’s how that works, right?). The popcorn is free, though, so have as much as you want along with your shot, beer, slushie or lemonade. Affectionately naming itself “Cleveland’s sweetest little bar,” the joint features live punk music, a jukebox with a catalog of local bands and just enough surprises jumping out at you to remind you that you’re actually in a funhouse.

Il Rione Pizzeria
    1303 W. 65th St., 216-282-1451

Il Rione might be "just a neighborhood pizza parlor," but it elevates the genre thanks to warm lighting, stylishly weathered interior, and a killer playlist from the golden age of rock. While the menu is spare, the New York/New Jersey style pizza exiting the open kitchen is amazing, with the clam pie taking the cake. Diners can choose from a half-dozen predesigned pies or can build their own from the crust up. Beer, wine, and cocktails round out the fun.

Mike’s Place
    4447, 1700 S Water St., Kent

Mike’s Place is a family restaurant that has been around since the summer of 1987. What makes it over the top? Being able to eat inside of a bus, and not to mention the airplane stationed right outside the restaurant. The whole road trip decor with ubiquitous license plates makes this family restaurant stand out from the rest.
