Covers Uncovered: Recreating Historic Japanese Stab Bindings
When: June 17-19, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 2016
In this three-day workshop, students will explore processes of papermaking, cover decoration, and binding to create stab bindings as they were likely produced during the Edo Period in Japan. We will learn the fundamentals of Nagashizuki and half-style papermaking to create soft and supple papers for cover making as well as historic methods of cover decoration. Students can expect to create one or more stab bindings and a collection of cover papers that they can take home for further exploration.
