12/19: Last Minute Handmade Market

Posted By on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM

The last place you’d look for a rivalry is within the community of people who make local handmade gifts — even if we are talking about Cleveland and Pittsburgh craftsmen. But the Last Minute Handmade Market and Screw Factory Open Studio distinguishes itself with a little competition on Saturday. A cooperative venture among Screw Factory artists, Cleveland Handmade and Pittsburgh’s I Made It Market, the Last Minute Handmade Market includes a Craft Off, in which both cities will enter a team made up of two or three artists. “They will be given an equal box of items, which will include a variety of things — with as much ‘found’ and ‘upcyclable’ items as possible — that they must use to make something,” says organizer Kathy Patton of Cleveland Handmade. The material will be delivered to the teams a week before the show. They can add whatever they want, but they have to use everything in the box. Whatever they produce will go on display without names, so you won’t know who made what. Visitors will vote on their favorite, and the winning team gets a dozen cupcakes from show participant Cleveland Cupcake Company. Meanwhile, more than 60 other artists and vendors will be at the market, selling knitwear, soap, candles, art, pottery, letterpress stationery and more to procrastinating shoppers. It runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Templar Industrial Park’s Lake Erie Building (13000 Athens Ave., Lakewood). Admission is free. — Michael Gill
