Steve Loomis, President of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, called into Mike Trivisonno’s show on WTAM yesterday to talk about police layoffs, violence downtown, and, of course, the Plain Dealer’s recent coverage of the use of force by officers.

That series of articles by Henry Gomez and Gabriel Baird dug deep into the department and city’s handling of the reports of those incidents, discrepancies and changes in those reports, and missing (but recently found!) video of one of those alleged incidents. Those articles led the department, the city, and Bill Mason to launch investigations. Solid journalism, from the initial reviews of public records to the follow-up on what became an Actual Story. (Their series of articles can be found here.)

That is not quite how Steve Loomis — whose job title, admittedly, demands he defend his cops — sees it.

  1. Why is Loomis pointing the finger at the PD? Did the PD make up the story? Is their story not supported by the facts?

I guess we should all turn a blind eye to police misconduct. Granted the vast majority of CPD are good, hard working guys & gals. It is the few bad apples that need to be gotten rid of to restore the reputation of those that play by the rules. CPD leadership (if you would call it that) should be at the forefront trying to get rid of these folks and not covering it up.

  2. I respect the CPD, but I can tell you, that as with all organizations, there are those that do not have the CPD intrest at heart, they are in it for them. Some times you have to let a few bad ones go to make a great organaization.

  3. Funny how the PD can look into the CPD all day long but somehow just missed all the corruption at the County level, but then again why turn on the hand that feeds you

  4. Good analysis – I was fascinated by the details ! Does anyone know where my assistant might be able to acquire a template a form document to complete ?
