A few weeks ago, Dave Hill, a Cleveland musician/writer/comedian who’s now based out of New York, and former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo filmed a webisode series for Adult Swim at Anselmo’s sprawling home/compound located just outside of New Orleans. Dubbed Metal Grasshopper, the show revolves around the premise that Anselmo will educated Hill in the ways of metal. A live goat is somehow involved in the process (and a picture of Anselmo, Hill and goat has circulated on the web). The show is due out this fall. In town to visit his 81-year-old father, Hill spent some more quality time with Anselmo, who played House of Blues last night with his new band the Illegals.
On Monday, they went out to a tattoo shop to get some new ink. Hill wouldn’t reveal his tattoo, but we think it was the logo for the band Witch Taint, the self-described “greatest, most extreme Norwegian Black Metal band of all-time even though we aren’t even from Norway.” And Anselmo had the logo of Portal, an Australian death metal band, tattooed on his knee.
And last night, during the middle of Anselmo’s performance, the burly singer invited Hill to the stage, saying he “bullied his way into letting him on stage.” “I didn’t really want to come out here tonight because I didn’t think you motherfuckers could handle it,” Hill said before implying that the Illegals had been “playing like pussies.” “You’re a pussy!” roared one fan in response. Undeterred, Hill strapped on a guitar and accompanied the guys as they ripped through the Superjoint Ritual tune “Fuck Your Enemy.” Hill shredded and even dropped to his knees at one point. “Thank you. I had a very nice time,” he said at the song’s conclusion. “Thanks for putting up with that,” Anselmo quipped. “Dave is a strange case.” After the show, Hill and Anselmo hung out in the back stage dressing room, smoking and drinking while listening to death metal on Anselmo’s laptop. “If we’re going to work together, we should be friends,” said Anselmo before the two posed for a photo. Check out a video of the performance.
