Elias Acevedo Sr., the man indicted on hundreds of rape and kidnapping charges, is in jail awaiting trial.

He was charged last week with the 1994 kidnapping, rape and murder of Pamela Pemberton and the 1995 kidnapping, rape and murder of Christina Adkins. He was also charged with the rape of two young girls.

Pemberton was found dead at Clark Fields in Tremont on Oct. 24, 1994. Adkins' remains were found Oct. 11 inside a utility vault nearby, just off I-90 and the Jennings Freeway. Adkins went missing in January 1995. Little to no information surfaced in the ensuing years since each woman's respective disappearance.

"Because the public became more aware and investigators were determined and relentless, people were re-interviewed and there was an increased interest in these missing person cases," FBI spokeswoman Vicki Anderson told the New York Daily News.

Toeing a different line earlier this fall, Anderson told Scene during the search for Adkins that the FBI never ceased their investigation of these cases. "We've always had Ashley (Summers) and Christina on the radar. They're actively working on them," she said. When asked if the May 6 rescue of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight had any impact on the investigation or the awareness of these cases, Anderson said that it had not.

Meanwhile, here's Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty: “This arrest is a direct result of some of the finest police work I’ve seen in 40 years. Nineteen years, and they never stopped trying to solve it."

As an interesting aside, Acevedo lived on Seymour Avenue, near Ariel Castro. He was arrested in May after police learned that he was a convicted sex offender who had failed to report his address. He was convicted of sexual battery in 2003.

Regarding the current cases, Acevedo is slated for an Oct. 30 pretrial conference.
