Ed FitzGerald Will Likely Seek a New Running Mate in Governor Campaign: UPDATE

Posted By on Tue, Dec 10, 2013 at 6:02 PM

UPDATE: Well, Eric Kearney is off the ticket.

Here's the word from the man himself, who's "resigning" from the campaign:

“It’s undeniable that this has come to be a distraction from a discussion of the vital issues facing Ohio, and the choice voters must make in this election. I have discussed this with Ed FitzGerald, and while I will always be grateful for him selecting me to be his running mate, we agree that the best course of action is for me to step aside from the campaign."

Outbound Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald is having his own little Thomas Eagleton moment in these early days of the big governor race here in Ohio.

When Fitz tapped State Sen. Eric Kearney as his running mate, Ohio newspapers revealed that Kearney and his wife owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes. Paired with silence from the campaign, the Fitz-Kearney rollout has been a PR disaster.

“Historians and pundits always say that the first real decision a governor makes is the one of running mate,” FitzGerald wrote to supporters in announcing Kearney's slot on the ticket. Well then.

Reports are trickling 'round the grapevine that FitzGerald may seek a replacement running mate and attempt to walk back that "first real decision."
