Singer/songwriter Ben Folds played a solo show at the world-famous Agora last night. Even though the threat of inclement weather plagued the show, it went off without a hitch as the keenly anticipated tornadoes and apocalyptic hail and rain never materialized. Playing to a near-capacity crowd, Folds brought his trademark sense of wry humor and his quirky tunes to the venue.
Gaining prominence with his trio The Ben Folds Five in the early 1990s, the band, um, folded in 2000 after a successful seven-year run. The outfit got back together in 2011 for a two-year hitch and the members still maintain a friendship, so further reunions aren’t necessarily off the table.
Offering a total of nineteen tunes, Folds gave the audience an eclectic mix of songs covering most of his studio album releases. He finished off the night with the Ben Folds Five hit “Army,” a tune he’s played hundreds of times as the capper at his solo shows.
Actress and singer Lindsey Kraft played a forty-minute opening set. Kraft may be best known from her stint on The Big Bang Theory as Penney’s dim ex-boyfriend Zack’s new wife.
A long-gestating project, a musical she’s writing titled Love, Me is being produced by Folds. She played a few numbers from the still-being-written show, with percussion accompaniment by Folds.
