11/11: CIM New Music at MOCA

Our art critic, Douglas Max Utter, called the rhythm and richly varied tone of Julian Stanczak’s 50-panel piece “Parade of Reds” (on view at MOCA Cleveland) “visual music.” The gallery will pulse with actual music tonight, when the Cleveland Institute of Music’s New Music Ensemble performs a concert of contemporary works to complement MOCA’s fall exhibits. Composers Toru Takemitsu and Jacob Druckman’s pieces share a lot with Stanczak’s abstract works. For one thing, they’re all about the way color and shape relate to one another. It’s easy to see “Parade of Reds” as an orchestration of the color, each panel presenting its own take on red and coming together as a chorus of sorts. Takemitsu’s influences include composers whose works can be described as “painting with sound”: Debussy, Ravel and Messaien. Also on view: Hugging and Wrestling, an exhibit of photo and video by contemporary Israeli photographers. Music starts at 7 p.m., followed by a reception at 8 at MOCA Cleveland (8501 Carnegie Ave., 216.421.8671). Admission is free, but RSVP is required. — Michael Gill
