1/29: Ain’t Misbehavin’ opens at Cleveland Play House

The Arizona Theatre Company’s production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ opened Thanksgiving weekend in Tucson, moved to Phoenix in early January and heads east this week to open at the Cleveland Play House tonight. Director Kent Gash calls the Fats Waller show “the best musical review of all time, in all of Broadway history.” Its portrait of black culture between the two world wars chronicles “an incredibly rich time in American music and culture,” he says. “Jazz was exploding, life was really exploding in Harlem. African Americans were having a real renaissance in terms of creativity. This music is like you’re hearing jazz being born.” Ain’t Misbehavin’ opens at 8 p.m. and continues through February 21 at the Cleveland Play House’s Bolton Theatre (8500 Euclid Ave., 216.795.7000). Tickets: $44-$64. — Michael Gill
