It’s hard to keep up with Cleveland’s hot food scene these days, thankfully Scene has your back. Here’s a list of new eateries that either just arrived in the last few months or are coming soon.

Cilantro Taqueria 2783 Euclid Heights Blvd., Cleveland Heights and 20090 Van Aken Blvd., Shaker Heights Fans of authentic Mexican and Cal-Mex food like tacos, tortas, burritos and bowls got a nice treat when this place opened in Cleveland Heights in early 2019, replacing a Chipotle. They also opened a location in Shaker Heights recently. It’s rare to find real tacos al pastor in these parts, slabs of achiote and pineapple marinated pork layered onto a vertical spit, or trompo, that cooks as it twirls. Now Open: Souper Market 1900 E. 6th St., Cleveland Like the other four Souper Market locations, this one will offer 10 from-scratch soups a day, with seasonal favorites joining daily specials. The brews are always served with good-quality bread from Stone Oven. In addition to the bowls, Souper Market offers a variety of salads and one very popular grilled cheese sandwich. Now Open: Cosmic Dave’s Rock Club 11310 Juniper Rd., Cleveland Cosmic Dave’s Rock Club combines the foods customers have become familiar with since the original Dave’s Cosmic Subs shop opened in Chagrin Falls in 1997 with a live music component. Now Open: Lindey’s Lakehouse 1146 Old River Rd., Cleveland Coastal Taco quietly closed its doors on the last day of the year. But the Flats-based eatery will reopen this spring as Lindey’s Lakehouse, according to owner Rick Doody. Now Open: Paragon 21920 Lakeshore Blvd., Euclid New owners Jackie Morere and Nick Burdock have little planned in way of changes for this popular east-side tavern except for the introduction of “Map Room pizzas.” The contemporary two-room, 86-seat tavern with bar and patio offers an appealing selection of American snacks, salads, burgers, sandwiches and entrees. Now Open: Brassica 20301 Mead Rd., Cleveland When Brassica opened April 12 in Van Aken District’s Market Hall was the first outside of Columbus. Diners select between a bowl of lentils and rice, greens or a sandwich assembled in fresh-baked whole wheat pita. They’re topped or filled with hummus, baba and a choice of falafel, braised Niman Ranch brisket, roasted chicken shawarma, or house-cured lamb bacon. Photo courtesy of Brassica
Now Open: Edwins Butcher Shop 13024 Buckeye Rd. Edwins Butcher Shop is now open in the Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. In addition to serving the community, the fresh-food market offers another level of culinary training for ex-cons. Photo by Douglas Trattner
Coming Soon: Lakewood Truck Park 13024 Buckeye Rd. All systems are a go for the Austin-inspired Lakewood Truck Park to open this summer on the corner of Detroit and Edwards avenues, and when it does, visitors can expect a bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of rotating food trucks. Coming Soon: Birdtown Brewery 2035 Quail St., Lakewood The team behind Barrio is not slowing down. They will soon add Birdtown Brewery, a casual eatery and brewery that has been slowly taking shape in the old St. Gregory Catholic Church in Lakewood’s Birdtown neighborhood. Now Open: The Van Aken District Market Hall 3341 Tuttle Rd, Shaker Heights The Van Aken District recently unveiled its Market Hall, a 20,000-square-foot food hub filled with familiar names like Banter, On the Rise and Bottlehouse. Now Open: Flight Cleveland 5712 Detroit Ave., Cleveland For years, Lindsay Smith has been obsessed with wine, and now, she’s surrounded by it. This past winter, she opened Flight Cleveland, a wine shop and bar, in the former home of Latitude 41n in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. The property features two distinct spaces, one devoted to a large bar and soft seating like sofas, armchairs and banquettes. The opposite side is dedicated to the tasting room and retail bottle shop. Now Open: Kensington Pub 2299 Lee Rd., Cleveland Heights The owners of Kensington Pub had a goal of opening by Thanksgiving. Last year. However, the wait appears to be worth it as the tacky exterior paneling came down and dazzling new panes of glass went up at the original Tavern Company space in Cleveland Heights. Wild Mango Legacy Village, Lyndhurst Jia Wei opened his first restaurant, Weia Teia, in Oberlin back in 1997. He followed that successful venture up with Wild Mango, which he opened three years later at Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted. In December, he opened a second Wild Mango, this one at Legacy Village. Wild Mango has earned a reputation for its distinctive cuisine, a blend of Asian, European and Latin flavors. Coming Soon: Cent’s Pizzeria 5010 Lorain Ave., Cleveland Formerly home to PM Security, a sturdy brick building on the eastern edge of Detroit Shoreway will undergo significant renovations by the landlord before being handed over to Vincent Morelli, who has been working for the past year to open his own pizza shop. Coming Soon: Dagu Rice Noodle 3710 Payne Ave., Cleveland When it opens in the next couple of months, Dagu Rice Noodle will be the first global (or international or national, for that matter) brand to open in Asiatown, a district built around immigrant-owned mom-and-pop shops. When Yu learned about the closing of Koko Café, he knew the location would be ideal for the concept, which caters not to Western palates but to Asian ones. Broths are pork or vegetable based, spicy or not spicy, and served alongside ingredients like quail eggs, tofu skin, bamboo shoots, kimchi, preserved vegetables, corn, Spam, beef, shrimp and various sauces and pastes. Now Open: Good Company 1200 W 76th St,, Cleveland The owners of the Plum opened the more casual Good Company restaurant in the former Vita Urbana space in Battery Park, and have proved that they have the right touch, despite a challenging address. Photo by Douglas Trattner
Coming Soon: Foodhisattva 2158 S. Taylor Rd., Cleveland Heights Frances Cheng and Joshua Sias hosted their first vegan pop-up back in 2014, quickly catching the attention of both vegan and non-vegan diners. Soon, additional pop-ups began popping up and drawing crowds at eastside locations like Bottlehouse Brewery and Poison Berry Bakery. Before long, the hunt for a suitable location in which to put down roots became a priority. Work has commenced on transforming the small, casual storefront into Foodhisattva, a 25-seat vegan eatery that will have its grand opening June 15. Now Open: The Ivy 1212 W. Sixth St. Liquid, a mainstay of the Warehouse District nightlife scene for 24 years, closed its doors for good last June. Following months of construction and renovation, that venue’s replacement opened in April. Coming Soon: Hot Chicken Takeover Crocker Park, Westlake Hot Chicken Takeover started out modestly five years ago as a weekend-only pop-up on the near-east side of Columbus. Since launching, the company added outposts in Clintonville and at Easton Town Center north of town. Next up for the quickly growing brand is Greater Cleveland, specifically Crocker Park. Now Open: Palazzo 10031 Detroit Ave., Cleveland Until about eight months ago, when Rafael Zaloshnja purchased the building that used to be a former version of the Italian eatery, Palazzo, it had been vacant since 2002. The Albanian-born chef has been working to renovate the space into an upscale Italian eatery since he purchased it, and has just opened up the joint. Photo from Google Maps
Now Open: Shake Shack Main terminal food court, Cleveland Hopkins Airport Shake Shack first came to the Cleveland area earlier this summer, opening in the new Pinecrest outdoor mall in Orange Village. The usual fare is now being served up at the new location in the Cleveland Hopkins Airport, including gooey cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, crinkle-cut fries and thick shakes. Now Open: Sichuan Hot Pot 2162 Rockwell Ave., Cleveland Die-hard fans of tongue-tingling Szechuan cuisine can’t seem to stay away from the relative newcomer, Sichuan Hot Pot. Design your own experience from a lengthy list that includes items like fried tofu, enoki mushrooms, eggplant, tripe, pork blood curd, spicy beef, fish filet, shrimp, Spam and squid balls, to name only a few. Now Open: Sittoos 1350, Euclid Ave., Cleveland The new downtown location of this fast-casual version of Aladdin’s is in Playhouse Square, in the former home of Raving Med. All the classics are here, from hummus, baba and tabbouleh starters, to fattoush, shawarma and shish tawook salads. Now Open: Literary Tavern 1031 Literary Rd., Cleveland Another long-simmering project, transforming the old Literary Cafe in Tremont into the Literary Tavern, is still progressing, albeit at a glacial pace. We’re hoping for it to open soon, fingers crossed. Photo by Douglas Trattner
Coming Soon: Good Night John Boy 1050 West 10th St., Cleveland If the name Good Night John Boy conjures up images of a ’70s-era melodrama, then owner Michael Schwartz has done his job. When it opens in the former Flip Side spot in the Flats, GNJB will be a highly conceptual dive bar dripping with nostalgic fun. By day, the cafe will serve diner-style breakfast and lunch. Now Open: Michael’s Genuine 3427 Tuttle Rd., Shaker Heights Since opening in April, the restaurant is the only one in existence outside of the Miami flagship. That’s not to say that chef Michael Schwartz has been sitting on his hands. Under the Genuine Hospitality umbrella are a handful of one-offs sprinkled throughout South Florida along with a growing chain of pizzerias.
