Winner of the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, folksinger Chris Ayer has quietly released two albums over the course of his relatively short career. His latest, Don’t Go Back to Sleep, shows off his understated, soulful voice. Ayer says the record is a “call to action,” but don’t let that turn you off. Songs like “Opening” and “Say What You Mean” don’t have explicitly political outlooks, and Ayer personalizes his activist impulses so that they’re not overbearing. He opens for the Benjy Davis Project and Tony Lucca at 8 p.m. at Wilbert’s (812 Huron Ave. 216.902.4663). Tickets: $7. — Jeff Niesel
