There’s more than history on display in the Cleveland Artists Foundation’s Visions of a City With a Soul: Four Photographers in Cleveland, 1925-2005 — Arthur Gray, William Barnhill, Jasper Woods, and Andrew Borowiec. There’s also a sense of place. The photographers worked during different eras — Gray shot in the ’20s, while Borowiec documents modern-day living — but the city remains pretty much the same. Whether it’s Barnhill’s dank alleys in the ’40s or Woods chronicling poverty a decade later, the urban landscape persistently reeks of despair.
