Just the Axe, Ma'am

At 8 tonight, the Italian-born Soloduo strums a repertoire of Rossini, Piazzolla, and Petit masterpieces for the eighth annual Classical Guitar Weekend at the Cleveland Institute of Music's Mixon Hall. "These guys are an impeccable ensemble. They have a dynamic rhythmic sense and an incredible energy," says Armin Kelly, whose Guitars International import store has teamed with the school to organize the series of performances, workshops, and master classes. "They've caused quite a stir around the world, and this will be their Cleveland debut." This afternoon, the marquee of guitar acts also boasts lutenist Nigel North, who'll play Baroque selections by Dowland, Byrd, and Ferrabosco. Jason Vieaux is in concert tomorrow night with a medley of Bach and Albéniz numbers. And fan fave Jonathan Leathwood also performs with cellist Rohan de Saram. "He's a genius," says Kelly. "He can do things with a guitar that most people can't do." Their program will range from compositions of the Renaissance to modern-day guitar riffs. "The range of the guitar — its expressive qualities and color — is extremely large," says Kelly. "In the hands of an artist, it's very, very exciting."
