On the surface, San Diego’s Slightly Stoopid appears to be one of those obnoxious joke bands — like the Barenaked Ladies. Just look at its name or the title of its latest album, Chronicitis. Truth is, the six-member group is a musically adroit crew that’s shared tours with groove pros like Ozomatli. While its mix of alt-ska riddims and dub-pop bounce occasionally recalls the white-boy throbs of 311, Slightly Stoopid gets its island fix a bit more organically. Sure, the fake Jamaican accents are a tad bothersome. But the rocksteady beats are usually tight, and guests like G. Love help make the band more than a one-note accessory to a bong-filled afternoon.
