The Blazing River Freedom Band attempts to shed its all-gay image tonight with a tribute to Broadway show tunes and Hollywood soundtracks in Stage and Silver Screen: Act II. Originally known as the Cleveland Lesbian/Gay/Allies Concert & Marching Band, the 30-piece ensemble changed its name so straight musicians could join. Plus, it’s more suited to the group’s upcoming concert schedule, which includes festival performances at places like Crocker Park and Tower City. “We do a lot more heterosexual gigs than we do in the gay and lesbian community,” says George Oberdorf, the band’s leader.

Last year, the group presented the initial Stage and Silver Screen program, which included performances by other gay concert bands from across the country. The orchestra goes solo tonight with an 11-song show that features tunes from Barnum, A Chorus Line, and The King and I. It will also perform medleys from recent Hollywood hits Moulin Rouge and Pirates of the Caribbean as well as some songs from the Harry Potter series. Members will also try to recruit new musicians — gay and straight — after the show. “It doesn’t matter what you identify yourself as,” says Oberdorf. “If you can get a couple notes out of a clarinet, come and play with us.”
