The Cleveland Orchestra Does Rodgers & Hammerstein at Blossom and the Rest of the Classical Music to Catch This Weekend

The classical music calendar is thinning out as summer winds down, but here are five events that you should consider.

AUGUST 14 – THURSDAY

7:00 pm – Isabelle and Raphael Olivier. This mother-son duo from Pairs share their artistic palette of harp and guitar. Ranging from jazz standards to modern improvisations and traditional French songs, their program will feature original music inspired by the open minds and open hearts of the people, places, and moments they’ve experienced. AUGUST 15 – FRIDAY

12:15 pm – Friends of the McGaffin Carillon. Lunchtime Carillon Concert by George Leggiero. An all-Italian program for the carillon’s Little Italy neighbors on the Feast of the Assumption. 11205 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. Free and live streamed.

AUGUST 16 – SATURDAY

7:00 pm – The Cleveland Orchestra, with Daniel Reith, conductor, and Stephen Tavani, violin. Gabriella Smith’s Rewilding, a TCO co-commission that marks the 50th anniversary of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, joins Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and Edward Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations at Blossom Music Center, 1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls. Tickets available online.

7:30 pm – Canton Symphony Orchestra. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame in Concert, with Steven Byess, conductor, the Players Guild of Canton, and the Canton Symphony Chorus. This semi-staged concert version of Victor Hugo’s story features a score by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a libretto adapted from the stage production. AUGUST 17 – SUNDAY

7:00 pm – The Cleveland Orchestra presents a Rodgers & Hammerstein Celebration. with Andy Einhorn, conductor, and Scarlett Strallen, Jacob Dickey, & Ben Davis, vocals. Classics tunes from The Sound of Music, South Pacific, and Oklahoma! along with lesser-known gems. Blossom Music Center, 1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls. Tickets available online.
