Since it’s been making the rounds at practically every sports and gay on thje West Side this past weekend, we’d like to pitch one scandalous bar rumor in the trash bin.
After a check with a couple of our impeccably reliable sources, we are delighted to report to you that Kevin — a bartender at the Parkview — is not buying the Edge (11213 Detroit Ave.; 216-221-8576) to turn the gay club into a straight sports bar by January 15.
One source — who happens to work at the Parkview — tells us that there is no “Kevin” bartending there. Furthermore, another insider — who helps manage the Edge — was damn near belligerent that we would even broach the subject. “Who the fuck is spreading that shit?” he asked.
We’ll tell you, kind sir. His name is “Alex,” a heavy-set, shifty-eyed “out-of-towner” (if you can call Parma out-of-town) with an apparent grudge against at least one of the bars. He’s a bartender at the new “alternative sports club” Argos, where nelly patrons into figure skating and gymnastics are made to watch manly athletic events like football and basketball on the club’s widescreen TVs. To straighten out the Edge would boost Argos’ business, our sources guess. The fact that “Alex” has been permanently barred as an Edge customer for “his big mouth” compounds the reasons behind the gossip. — Cris Glaser

  1. It is interesting how rumors spread, and to help dispel the rumor, Alex doesnt work at Club Argos and the Egde is a sister club, not a competitor, which means some of the owners of the Edge are also owners of Club Argos.
As for the patrons of Argos being “nelly”, I am sure they would take offense to a degree with that statement. When Argos was under development, patrons were questioned and a resounding request for an Alternative Sports Bar was at the top of the list. “We just want a place where we can go and watch a game”, said David Frasier, a patron of Union Station.
Club Argos fulfilled that request and the seats are filled during games! The patrons have fun here, they dont worry about anything, have a beer, know their car is secure, and can grab snacks like Pizza and Wings on any given special game. Superbowl tickets to the private party on 2/4 are an indication what the people are asking for.
In my opinion, some rumors get started and perpetuated for many reasons, some patrons are not comfortable with the changes that the “old gay bars” are making. Gay bars are changing to meet the needs of the patrons. While a “hook up” is always good, that isn’t what clubs are about anymore. Clubs are places where you can have fun, no matter what you are doing, whether you want to dance or sing karaoke!
