In Doubting Thomas Gallery’s New American Art, local artists take on such hot-button topics as sex and stereotypes. “We’re not concerned with making money or gaining popularity,” says curator William Schwartz. “The show is a reminder that free speech is not dead and that presenting critical sociopolitical observations is far more patriotic than apathy in any form.” A half-dozen artists — including Dana DePew, Jim Karpinski, and Stephe DK — contribute paintings, textiles, and sculptures. “I’m not interested in craftsmanship that is devoid of meaning,” says Schwartz. “Political art is the new pop art.”
