In Doubting Thomas Gallery’s
New American Art, local artists take on such hot-button topics as sex and stereotypes. “We’re not concerned with making money or gaining popularity,” says curator William Schwartz. “The show is a reminder that free speech is not dead and that presenting critical sociopolitical observations is far more patriotic than apathy in any form.” A half-dozen artists including Dana DePew, Jim Karpinski, and Stephe DK contribute paintings, textiles, and sculptures. “I’m not interested in craftsmanship that is devoid of meaning,” says Schwartz. “Political art is the new pop art.”
