This modernized adaptation of the oft-filmed Jonathan Swift tale is an OK diversion for holiday-weary moviegoers, even if the Avatar jokes diminish its shelf life. Jack Black plays a slacker mailroom dude named Gulliver who works at a New York City newspaper. After he stumbles into a travel assignment involving the Bermuda Triangle, Gulliver lands on the island of Lilliput, where he’s given a giant makeover, becoming not only the champion of the kingdom, but a cultural role model to its tiny Victorian civilization. Black busts out a few rock & roll routines and generally acts like Jack Black throughout. So if you think any of Swift’s corrosive, misanthropic satire makes it into the script, Gulliver isn’t the only one living in a fantasy world.
