K. Flay

K. Flay’s talent shines in her latest Life as a Dog, put out just this summer. Flay originally wrote a hip-hop song as a satirical joke on the formulaic music industry but then realized just how much fun she had in making music and soon everyone else noticed her talent too. Tracks “Make Me Fade” and “Thicker than Dust” incorporate indie rock elements and fuse them with a dance-y beat and catchy, rhyming lyrics. “Can’t Sleep” takes on a poppy, romantic ballad style with Flay’s velvety voice amid synth sounds and erupts into an infectious chorus. On the other hand, “Turn it Around” and “Get it Right” take on a definite hip-hop feel as Flay raps and summons background sounds that feel positively old school. Her style is strangely all over the place, and yet is tied together well. 9 p.m., $10 ADV, $12 DOS. Mahall’s 20 Lanes. (Trenholme)
