Mike Pinto/Shrub/Riptide

Reggae-driven rock can be a tough genre, one filled with bands and artists constantly vying somehow to distinguish themselves. And it’s not an easy thing; the forebears of the subgenre have all tapped the most interesting roots (311, Sublime, Slightly Stoopid). Mike Pinto asserts himself through his songwriting and by casting a wide net across neighboring styles of music. On this 2013 album, Truthful Lies, Pinto navigates waters like surf rock, dancehall and soul, all while immersing himself in the traditions of amped-up skank riddim. “Where the Beach Meets the Ocean” shows of the simplicity of Pinto’s approach, while “Tornado” reels in multiple influences to create a rather large sound. All that and everything in between is some fun-lovin’ music. (Sandy)
