Black Frog Brewery has discontinued operations at its Midtown brewery. The Toledo-based brewery opened its second location last year in the MidTown Collaboration Center (1974 E. 66th St.) alongside Pearl’s Kitchen and The Sixty6. This past spring, Black Frog owner Chris Harris closed the 10-year-old Holland brewery as well.
Chef Tiwanna Scott-Williams, who runs Pearl’s Kitchen in Midtown, Rocket Arena and Case Western Reserve University, will be taking over the space. The liquor license has been transferred into her possession, she says.
“We’re extremely excited to be expanding,” says Scott-Williams. “When it became obvious that Chris [Harris] decided that he was going to retire and that this wasn’t something that he wanted to continue with, it made sense for me, already being in the space, to take it over.”
Scott-Williams says that her plans for the next-door bar and brewery include a new cocktail menu, beer list and the introduction of a new food menu for guests seated at the bar. Eventually, she plans to roll out her own line of Pearl’s beer.
“The plan is for me to begin brewing sometime in the future,” she says. “I’m looking forward to getting my feet wet in the world of beer.”
Pearl’s Kitchen and Taproom, as the new venture will be called, has a hidden advantage in the kitchen: chef Carlos Singleton. Singleton has worked at nearly a half dozen local craft breweries in Cleveland and maintains close ties with many brewers and brewery owners.
“We will do a transition period over the next few weeks or so and look to have an official launch event before the end of the year,” says Scott-Williams.
