As hoped, Cleveland City Council has passed an emergency ordinance that establishes a temporary program for bars and restaurants to extend outdoor seating into parking lots, streets and other public rights-of-way, including on-street parking areas and parklets.

The simple act of allowing bars and restaurants to spread out into adjacent space enables them to increase occupancy while still complying with social distancing guidelines.

As an emergency measure, the act should take effect and be in force immediately upon its passage and approval by the Mayor and some finalizing by City Planning. This ordinance is intended to be narrowly tailored to address the negative impacts created by the COVID-19 crisis.

“The idea of reclaiming our streets for non-vehicular use has been something I’ve been passionate about and banging the table about for a while, even before COVID,” Cleveland City Councilman Kerry McCormack told Scene. “We need to do everything we can to support our local small businesses and part of that will be closing down streets in commercial corridors with the understanding that in the process we need to be thoughtful about ADA and transit so that we’re not disadvantaging people.”

Bonnie Flinner, owner of Prosperity Social Club in Tremont, says that she would welcome the opportunity to expand her service area given the strict social distancing guidelines.

“Creative use of outdoor spaces for dining and customer seating, perhaps even spaces not previously considered, will definitely make a difference in jump-starting revenue for struggling restaurants and businesses upon reopening,” she says.

  1. Its truly funny how “social distancing” and COVID, in general, is still a thing. Bars are not allowed to open a week or so ago and people are being arrested in other states not too long ago for opening their businesses. But when people protest (not even talking riot), thats okay. “That is their right” and that is ok. But I’m an asshole a week or 2 ago for wanting to grab a beer?

Its ridiculous how overblown this COVID thing is. Lets just be honest everyone, its okay to live our lives and we have been since we have flattened the curve when we stayed home the first 30 days. to be clear – i am on board with the flatten the curve and stayed home responsibly. Its after that, where I have a problem. And I still have a job. 40 million people lost their job because of the liberals making everyone staying home. But then those same liberals are out protesting (which i support protests) but its okay bc they are protesting. Once the protests/riots end, I can’t wait for everyone to come back on board and act like COVID is still this CRAZY thing that we shouldn’t go out again.

Something else with the times we are living in.

  2. Yes this is all crazy the rules, regulations, and hypocrisy of I can do this you can’t do that is appalling.

    Live and let live

  3. So when Sam Allard comes leading another antifa/blm smash fantasy downtown, then all these diners will be in danger.

  4. Does this mean we won’t have to hide our beers in the Muni Lot before Browns games?

  5. L4E: You must be one of those covidiots who was willing to fight for your right to party. What’s a couple of hundred thousand corpses, as long as you have your beers, right. Tell it to those doucheebag friends of yours at Town Hall, and don’t forget to kiss Bobby George’s ass.

  6. What Pre-COVID fantisy world are you living in where the CLE Muny Lots are even open for tailgating before Brown’s Games?
And who’s going to tailgate when the Browns are playing before TV Cameras Only, and First Energy Stadium sits empty on Sunday’s for the 2020-2021 Season ?
