As the name suggests, the star of the show is Vienna corned beef, which is offered straight up in corned beef sandwiches as well as griddled Reubens layered with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and 1000 Island. Those sandwiches are available in four different sizes, the largest of which approaches one pound of meat. In our case, the meat was sliced to order, warm, tender and not too fatty.
Other sandwiches feature pastrami, smoked turkey and a combo creation called the West 25th with turkey, pastrami, lettuce, tomato, onion, Swiss cheese and mayo. There’s also a gyro on the menu, but I didn’t spot the spit. All sandwiches come on grilled rye, but they can be ordered as wraps as well.
In addition to the sandwiches – and rolling paper – the shop sells fries, milkshakes and ice cream cones.
Vienna serves until midnight on Fridays and 2 a.m. on Saturdays.
