Christmas isn’t complete without at least one irreverent holiday
album. This year’s offering comes courtesy of Frylock, Master Shake and
Meatwad, those loveable characters in the Adult Swim cartoon Aqua
Teen Hunger
Force. The opening tune, “Feliz Navidad,”
features lyrics about the Mexican fast food they’d like to have for
Christmas. They sing “I want to get me some extra chips,” while Meatwad
reminds them to not forget the guacamole. Their hip-hop version of
“Hark! the Herald Angels Rap” takes a page out of George Clinton’s
music book, invoking old-school funk flavor and including a rant about
how Jesus was black. Alt-country icon Neko Case has a cameo, adding her
distinctive croon to the twangy “Santa Left a Booger in My Stocking”
and participating in a funny intro. Outlandish renditions of “I’ll Be
Home for Christmas,” “All I Want for Christmas Is My One Front Tooth”
and “‘Twas the Night Before Jesus” border on offensive. But if you’re
at all familiar with Aqua Teen Hunger Force, that won’t come as a
surprise. — Niesel
