If you didn’t get laid after the Deftones show at House of Blues last night, it’s no one’s fault but your own. The sexy, panty-dropping sounds of the California band were enough to get hips grinding and heads nodding.

At one point I looked around and it seemed like the entire audience had that “awww shit, yeah” face.

Deftones started strong with the title track from their latest album, Diamond Eyes. The primal, seductive screams of frontman Chino Moreno were only part of the fun. The flashing searchlights added a surreal twist, in some cases blanking out Moreno’s svelte frame, making it seem like only a star-shaped object was onstage.

“Pins and Needles” got the crowd in the mood for a rousing set that spanned the band’s career. Trading his high socks for skinnies, Moreno was in great form last night. His voice was solid, even when he tapped it for a sizable chunk of material from the demanding Adrenaline album.

Still, it was older songs like “Change” and “Shove It” that really got the audience moving. During “Passenger” it seemed like everyone was on the verge of getting truly rowdy, which they hopefully did when they got home. —Jara Anton

  1. lol I dunno where you got the horny vibe from. Everyone around me just wanted to kill each other in the pit. Though there was that drunk chick that was making out with any random guy around her that wanted her tounge in their mouth. Just say no to herpes, kids. Great show. The Deftones don’t know how to disappoint!

  2. Not a single song off “Saturday Night Wrist,” and I don’t think they played anything off their self-titled album, either. How a band can play for 100 minutes and completely avoid two entire albums’ worth of material is baffling. Still, they sounded great—best I’d seen ’em in Cleveland in a long time.

  3. They played Needles and Pins and Bloody Cape off their self titled album but yea they did totally diss Saturday Night Wrist but I don’t mind cause they played a lot of old school stuff. I was REALLY hoping to hear Back to School since I heard they started playing it live again but that’s ok.

  4. They never disappoint. Chino was definitely in great form and way more “svelte” since their last trip to CLE. Not many bands reach that far back in their catalogue and play not one, but many hits from their earlier albums. I was kind of hoping to hear something from Saturday Night Wrist, maybe some Kimdracula, but it didn’t matter from the spread out set they put together.
Hands down, amazing show and interesting getting to see Lionel Richie perform on bass. Get well Chi!
