Cain Park hosted a pair of bands last night that seem so disparately different, yet gel so well together, that they seemed destined to tour together. SoCal’s stalwart Los Lobos, made famous by covering Ritchie Valen’s tunes (and providing dubbed vocals for Lou Diamond Phillips’ portrayal of Valens) in his 1987 biopic “La Bamba,” got the crowd on their feet with some Grateful Dead covers, a few Tejano tunes, and a rip-roaring masterclass in axe-slinging.
Colorado-founded The String Cheese Incident would play until the early hours of the morning if Cleveland Heights didn’t have a post-11:00 PM noise ordinance. They’re like the Energizer Bunny: once they start they don’t want to stop. The stalwart jam band looked like they were having the times of their life on that stage; a feat that probably every time they are allowed to play for a crowd.
