[image-1]Pope Francis today named Nelson J. Perez as the new bishop of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. He comes to Northeast Ohio from Rockville Centre, New York, where he has been serving as auxiliary bishop since 2012.

Perez’s designation comes months after former Bishop Richard Lennon retired from the post, citing a vascular dementia diagnosis.

Mass is being celebrated this afternoon at St. John Cathedral, where Perez will deliver the homily. A formal installation ceremony will take place Sept. 5 at the church.

“I am so very happy to be here with you, to learn from you, grow with you and serve you with pastoral devotion,” Perez said this morning as the news was announced.

Toledo Bishop Daniel Thomas will continue to serve in an administrative capacity in Cleveland until September.

  1. As a Catholic I’d like to be the first to say that I am glad Jon Lovitz has finally found work again.

  2. Just another member of the Catholic hierarchy whose primary concern will be the collection plate. Why do you think all those other Bishops and Cardinals all over the world allowed for child rape? Keep that collection plate full.

  3. You always know the Devil is at work when you see such comments. Who else but the devil would be so hateful to the Cross.
