Or, ya know, always.

But it should especially be on your mind the next two weeks, as Ohio law enforcement agencies fan out and target drivers with a promise to make good on that whole “Click it or ticket” campaign.

According to the AP:

More than 900 law-enforcement agencies across Ohio will be aggressively ticketing motorists who don’t buckle their seat belts in the next two weeks.

The Department of Public Safety said agencies participating in the seat-belt safety program include the State Highway Patrol.

Department Director Thomas Charles said overall seat-belt use in the state increased from 65 percent in 2000 to 84 percent in 2010. But Charles said hundreds of people die each year while not wearing a seat belt. The department said 397 people killed in crashes on Ohio’s roads in 2009 were not wearing seat belts.

All snark aside, buckle up, folks. At the very least, you’ll avoid a fine.

  1. scumbag cops get a life!! They do it for money not safety,,,,,,,, there are no seatbelts on public buses or school buses so all you morons out there who think it is for safety are complete idiots like the cops and lawmakers themselves! Leave the earth you are worthless and do nothing to provide safety to other motorists!

  2. do they have any numbers on how many people die each year cause they were wearing their seatbelts?my best friend would have lost his life years ago if he was actually wearing his seat belt.but he got lucky and wasnt wearing it.even doctors and police told him if he was he wouldnt have made it.and then also that unlucky officer years ago that got in the accident on duty and burnt to death in his cruiser cause he couldnt get his seatbelt off.i personally think it should be a choice to wear it or not.just like riding a motorcycle which is a lot more dangerous there is no seatbelt on there and wearing a helmet is a choice.

  3. I really wish they would concentrate on the terrible driving habits as much as they do on Impared Road Blocks and Seat Belts.
Perhaps some attempt to reduce the frequency of accidents would be more effective in reducing highway fatalities than simply reacting to the result of accidents.
Oops, sorry, lost my head there , you cannot collect fines for good driving.

btw- there is NO excuse for not wearing a seat belt if provided. Busses have significant mass and rarely travel highway speeds. The rare example of inability to egress does not justify the numbers which would be alive had restraint been worn.
But like the insurance guy said years ago, you are better off killing them than having them
in the wheelchair. You can calculate the possible income left from a dead person. The wheelchair is an open checkbook. The repeal of the motorcycle helmet law was to insure a steady supply of harvestable organs.
