Chardon High School Employee Arrested for Alleged Relationship with Student

A part-time Chardon High School employee has been arrested and placed on administrative leave after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Tyler Merkle, 26, will be arraigned today in Chardon Municipal Court. He faces sexual battery charges.

Chardon schools Superintendent Michael P. Hanlon Jr. alerted parents and staff about the arrest in an email. Hanlon said nothing about Merkle’s background check indicated he should not have been hired by the district. He worked as a tutor and coach for the high school.

The age of the student and the nature of what happened have yet to be released.
