In a surprising and context-free press release, the city of Cleveland has announced that it is no longer interested in purchasing the Cleveland.com building at 1801 Superior Avenue for its new police headquarters.

Dear Mr. Geis:

At this time the City of Cleveland no longer desires to pursue the purchase of 1801 Superior Avenue property for the Cleveland Division of Police Headquarters with GLP Superior LTD. Thank you for working with the City on this important project.


That’s the letter in full to developer Fred Geis from Matthew Spronz, the Mayor’s director of capital projects.

Who knows what’s up. 1801 Superior had been one of 24 potential sites when the city announced its intent to purchase it in June. The project was slated to cost $60 million and was scheduled for completion in 2019.

“The new police headquarters in the downtown neighborhood is one of the many ways we are moving the division into the future,” Mayor Jackson said at the time. “We are systematically creating the necessary technological and logistical infrastructure to reduce crime while being more open and accessible to the community.”

  1. Well if no contracts were signed, then no foul.
    But, it is emblematic of the Jackson Administration’s continued failure to even attempt to chew gum, and walk at the same time.
