It could be 60 degrees in Cleveland on March 26. It could also be 25 degrees. The safe bet is something closer to the latter — despite some unseasonably warm days in late March last year, there was a high of 36 degrees on that exact date in 2019. Also, Cleveland’s last snow of the season, incidentally, has only fallen before March 26 seven times since 1950.

Either way, baseball is scheduled to be played that day at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario, specifically at 1:10 in the afternoon, MLB announced today.

  1. SSDY…another goddam snowout on Opening Day. I don’t go in April or May anymore…it isn’t worth the misery of freezing your ass off. Basebaall is a summer game. So I wait until June. Have fun, chumps.

  2. Back in the day, MLB wouldn’t schedule games in northern cities until later in the season. Likewise, that would limit 110 degree games later in the season in southern cities. But they stopped that, and much to my surprise, my understanding is that teams like Cleveland want those games. The thinking being there’s a bunch of hoopla around the start of MLB, and if the city has to wait 3 weeks or so for opening day then the excitement has died. Seems dumb. I mean, opening day will be sold out like always, but I guarantee home game #2 will be 5,000 people if they’re lucky. Same with the rest of April

  3. For once, I agree with Abe. It’s not just the Tribe. Other northern cities like Chicago, New York, Detroit, and Boston, have routinely the same situation. Huge crowds and festivities for the openers in April, followed by piss-poor attendance numbers all during April. Sometimes even well into May, depending on the weather patterns in a ggiven year. Snow-outs occasionally, but mostly rainouts or wet grounds (no more postponements for cold…not enough open dates for rescheduling anymore).

    And now they’re creeping backward…into MARCH? Ridiculous! Used to be able to go on into October, but all the extra rounds of playoffs and wild-card matchups have put the kibosh on that, because otherwise you have November Series games, at night, and that’s almost as as March and April. Once again, idocy and greed…outweigh
    and overrule common sense( I was going to say trump, but thought better of it).

  4. I hope that major league baseball orders retractable roofs in northern cities if they are opening the season in March.
