Cleveland Leaders Celebrate Supreme Court Same-Sex Ruling

Today the Supreme Court, in a historic 5-4 ruling, declared that same-sex marriage was legal in the United States of America.

City leaders will be gathering on the steps of City Hall at noon to celebrate the news.

“This decision will help move our country forward in the right direction – guaranteeing that everyone has the right to marry whom they choose and receive the same benefits of legal marriage as do their neighbors, relatives and friends,” said Mayor Frank Jackson, in a press release.

“This is the right decision for our country and for Cleveland. I have long been a supporter of marriage equality and I am happy for all those whose lives are impacted.”

Council President Kevin Kelley echoed the sentiment. 

“The Supreme Court understands that this country cannot discriminate against people because of who they love,” he said. 

Councilman Joe Cimperman agreed that today was an important day: “We are celebrating human rights, we are celebrating tolerance and we are celebrating an awareness that love is a mighty force, able to conquer bigotry and discrimination.”
