If some of you haven’t got a big X marked on the calendar for tomorrow, we’ll just go ahead and remind you that this Saturday is Cleveland’s inaugural Slut Walk. As we first reported at the beginning of the month, the walking-talking feminist exhibition is all about taking back the offending word and sending a message about sexual assault.

“We have a problem with the idea that you deserve somehow less respect if you’re dressed in what is considered slutty clothes, whatever that means,” event organizer Casey Schroeder told Scene. “This is about demanding respect, safety, and fair treatment regardless of the way that we’re dressed.”

For the details, we suggest you aim your browser over to the event’s official web site.

  1. Let me see if I understand the feminist position. Instead of elevating women and suggesting that if you dress like a lady, you will be treated like a lady. Their position is if women dress like a slut/tramp/strumpet/reprobate/sleaze/skank/ho…. never you men mind the “come hither” information they are sending. Treat them like the inner lady they all secretly wish to be. Very interesting. Good luck with that.

  2. Well Mr. Above…. I think you need to think outside of the box…. and don’t you feel a bit manipulated by the marketing culture into thinking this outfit means this and that outfit means that. I think you will enjoy the freedom of thinking on your own and also – let me give you good advice… do not think because she (or he) dresses like a ‘lady’ or ‘gentleman’ or ‘ or whatever… that means that they are. Clothes are fun and expressive but I think our culture has placed way too much judgement about it … bare skin is not permission to be offensive or violent. I hope you give this some thought.

  3. @Joanne Koffler-Russell……….I would give it a thought, if you were able to write a cogent sentence. Focus, and try again.

  4. As a woman I must say that this idea is stupid and underminds the inteligence of women. Think outside the box? If you run around with your body uncovered in your underwear, and bedroom clothes, YOU have no moral respect or self respect! Ethical and moral people do not walk around dressed this way. You want respect earn it and show it to others! No sexual assult is not excusable at anytime but this “Slut walk” just shows how ignorant some women can be.

  5. Rape is a crime of violence and domination. it has nothing to do with what someone is wearing. While I will enjoy the eye candy and spectacle, equating how someone is dressed with the abomination that is rape is incongruent.

  6. Let me make sure I have this right. You have organized an event to be attended by women dressed in a fashion that could be viewed as lewd, degrading, and possibly even construed as solicitous, (or at the very least inferring a lack of self respect) in order to establish a platform for demanding respect from others. Really? I mean………..REALLY? Wow. 1984 and “doublespeak” are finally here. 37 years late, but here nevertheless.

  7. A slut walk to protest against rape? That’s like a bunch of morbidly obese people having an ice cream social to promote weight loss… There are consequences for actions, in the not-too-distant future, G-d Himself will come bearing the final reminder. If you want to be treated like someone of repute, dress and act like it. My son is in Jr. High, and the girls are so gross and aggressive, he wants to be homeschooled. Sluts- those are your daughters and granddaughters who’ve learned from you. There is not a whole lot of time- You’d best start repenting now. You are percieved and treated by others according to this dress and behavior. The scriptures warn you are responsible for the lust and lewdness you create, causing men to stumble. There is a price for everything, including being a harlot (which is not a profession, but a lifestyle). Your local church is too interested in getting your money to lay it out for you, so I’ve just done it here. Wake up, clean up, fess up. Three days of darkness next month, then all bets are off. If Jesus can work it out for the woman at the well, He can do it for you.

  8. Lets drill down to the root cause, “do not throw rocks when you live in a glass house”. Do you actually feel you have the right to “judge” another when you have not taken the time to judge yourself? Our society has a culture of throwing rocks without looking at our own faults and incorrect traits, when you see something you do not understand or agree with ask yourself a simple question of what is the underlying motivation for your judgement. Try to be unbiased in your thinking, and let go of the heuristics that cloud your better judgement, we want to leave this world a better place than we found it.

  9. For those of you who clearly do not “get it”, this is in reponse to comments made by some lawmakers that women who “dress like sluts” are “asking for it.” Dressing “like a slut” is no more an invitation to rape than owning a bank is an invitation to robbery. Does someone with a fancy car “ask” to have his or her car stolen? Does owning the fancy car justify the theft? No. If I show cleavage (and I frequently do) that gives no man the right to rape me. Further, for those of you who are ignorant of the facts surrounding rape, although rape is a “sex crime”, it is actually a crime of power and control. A man does not rape a woman because he is so turned on by her hotness that he cannot help himself. Women do not cause rape. Men do.

  10. Well the walk went well, thought I was going to see alot SLUTS in one place turns out it was nothing but a bunch of OLD WHORES.

  11. Of the the ACTUAL, REAL issues in the world, this is what they choose to spend a day doing?? What about the natural disasters, killing people? What about the famines? What about disease and sickness? If you need a day to feel all proud of yourself, why not help out mankind instead of fashion, clothes, and other selfish pursuits. You just walking around the street in slutty clothes, and providing most men with free eye candy for a day. Way to go!!! Stop wasting your time. You will always be labeled as a slut, even more so after you walk around the streets looking like one. Pick an issue that matters!!

  12. this is a joke. nobody believes that if you dress like a whore you deserve to be raped. but with all the sick people out there.. if you knowingly dress in a way that screams “please look at me I want attention” the crazies will definitely notice. So by doing so on purpose in protest is only cutting off your noses to spite your face. if you dont want to get mugged dont walk around in the bad parts of town by yourself at night. if you do , you are an idiot and better accept the negatvive possibilites of your decision. it doesnt mean you deserve to be mugged.. it means you are rolling the dice pointlessly. Andinthis day and age, dressinlg like a slut is rolling the dice.

  13. Common sense prevails in any situation and obviously none being used in this case. A slut walk……please! It’s absolutely ridiculous! Agreed that there is NEVER an excuse for sexual assault/rape, but we don’t live in a completely civilized society anymore and the predators could care less about this dumb slut walk. That’s like putting yourself in a den of hungry lions and daring them to chow down on your dumb arses! Give me a break!

  14. Father Colon Mc Feely will be the master of cerimonies
Sister Pat O’Leery formerly Father Pat O’Leery will bring up the rear
Grand Marshall Bishop Lennin will bless the jesus juice
to celebrate sisters being born again there will be a party at the arch diocese dungeon downtown with a raffle
    BYO whips ect…………………………………………………………………………………………………….

  15. Slut Walk? Who really takes this serious? If you act or dress like a slut, don’t get offended if people treat you as one.

  16. I understand the point they are making maybe one day the rest of you will too. It should NOT matter how a women is dressed to get ur RESPECT. i should be able to walk down the street on mini dress with my ass hanging out and you should still know that it is NOT ok for you too grab it! p.s just because a women is wearing a dress that don’t mean she is lady! use ur mind not just ur eyes to spot out a slut!!

  17. OK im a 16 year old girl who has been raped. I was walking home from school in my basketball uniform when 3 guys jumped me from behind. Its not only the women that walk alone at night or have high heels and dresses that get raped. Its not the victoms fault, its the perverts and their dumbass parents that didnt teach them how to keep their dick in there pants when someone says no. And thats the purpose of the slut walk is to show u ignorant ass men that just because we are women and are free to wear what we want doesnt give you the right to put your hands where they dont belong. Because I am a women no matter how i dress or act if u are a true man you should always show respect to a WOMEN and if you dissagree with me then more power to you and the rest of the perverts and pedifiles that think women and young girls like myself asked asked to be raped.

  18. @ Joe18750……. Very interesting. -IS NOT A COMPLETE sentence!! It can be used at the end of a sentence following a comma, but not as a complete sentence. FOCUS and try again! By the way, there is no comma in “FOCUS and try again” you are very welcome for the grammatical corrections to your own argument.

  19. I understand the message they’re going for here, but I really think there would have been better ways to go about doing it.

  20. I enjoy how all men are grouped together as “ignorant ass men” because obviously all of us are just one big collective group of horrible people. I enjoy the fact that an event that calls for respect and fair treatment inspires people to disrespect and unfairly treat an entire gender. I guess comments like that one are all you really need to know about events like this, a great message (respect for women) gets horribly lost somewhere along the way and turns into something like this.

  21. What’s next? Teaching the pedophiles a lesson and calling for respect for children by parading almost completely naked children down the street? Does anyone else see the flawed logic here?

  22. I love it when women strut there stuff, but what does it mean when they dress like SLUTS, but they want respect ? They are fucking crazy. If you attend and you are a guy , “wear your sunglasses or you will probably get smacked for checking out or ogling these SLUTS in any way shape or form? Just some crazy BITCHES that want ATTENTION !

  23. They need to put all the males with baggy pants down their ass in the same category if they are going to talk about what women wear like this.

  24. Cleveland – other cities think this is a great idea. In fact, the majority of intelligent people do. Stop showing your ignorance, Cleveland. Please at least *attempt* to take your place among actual cities.

We need to get rid of the S word once and for all. Clothing is a choice. It has nothing to do with morality. Stop bashing people.

  25. “If you dress and act like a slut, don’t be offended if people treat you like one”

This is an extremely flawed argument. It’s like saying “If you look like a *insert racial/cultural slur here*, don’t be surprised when we treat you like one”.

I don’t think that scantily clad women are any better or worse than women in coats. Also, I don’t think there is anything wrong with women being promiscuous. Sexuality is a choice, and people shouldn’t be disrespected for being who they want to be. Asexual? Fine. Promiscuous? Fine. Gay? Fine. Transsexual? Fine. GET OVER IT, people!

Aka, mind your own business. People aren’t going to be exactly like you. “Sluts” don’t affect your life. So leave them be. (And to those that would say, “They steal our men” – take a hike; that is a problem with your man, not other woman).

  26. @Jaclin McMurray; Good to know you don’t think rape and domestic violence are important issues.
@really?!?!; some people do believe that if you dress a certain way you deserve to be raped. Don’t you watch FOX news?
