Cleveland is optimistic that it won’t have to completely cancel the city’s official Fourth of July festivities because of the coronavirus pandemic. (Unofficial celebrations will undoubtedly continue right on schedule, much to the chagrin of area dogs.)

The Downtown Cleveland Alliance announced today that it is simply postponing the Light Up the Lake fireworks shebang until Sept. 19, by which time Cleveland will be in the mood for another round of patriotic explosions.

“After weeks of researching ways to go forward with the fireworks as planned, we decided that the most prudent and safe way to celebrate was to reschedule Light Up the Lake for a later date,” DCA’s Joe Marinucci said in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating together in the fall with the many families who traditionally visit downtown Cleveland for this annual event.”

  1. It makes more sense to cancel the Fourth of July Celebration than it does to celebrate the Fourth of July 2 and 1/2 months later on September 19th.
    It would be like celebrating Halloween in January.

  2. Since we’re already doing without everything else this year, a year without fireworks shows won’t kill us. Suck it up and move on.

  4. 4th of July is canceled because America is over. They are celebrating something else with this display. Check out the UN’s new website where they have unveiled the UNNWO, yes the United Nations New World Order where we will be replacing capitalism with “Happytalism” (no joke) in a one world government, financial, and religious system (one love).

  5. Can’t understand why an arbitrary date such as September 19th. At least do it over Labor Day Weekend. That would make more sense.

  8. So damn stupid. Lets continue to just cancel things bc there is a virus in the world. So damn stupid. There is LITERALY no difference between July 4th and September 19th. The only thing that could possibly be different is there is a vaccine. Since we know there will 100% not be a vaccine at this point, then what is the purpose of postponing?

  9. NOW they say on CNN that it’s so much safer to be outside than inside public spaces. (I could have told you that and I’m no doctor!) But nooo – they had to go and cancel or postpone practically every single outdoor festival this summer. And then they complain when people crowd the bars. What kind of public policy is this? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

    Oh and September is the start of early flu season so they are right on time to have crowds for fireworks. Watch it be cancelled again due to “health reasons.”
