If you haven’t yet tuned in to 87.7 this year, you may not have realized that Cleveland’s rock radio station has, in fact, switched to Latin programming.

As of 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31, the plug was pulled on the alt-rock station “Cleveland’s Sound,” giving way to the Spanish-based station “La Mega 87.7, Latino and Proud.”

Below is a scoped aircheck of 87.7’s new sound, courtesy of the fine folks at Ohio Media Watch.

You can also head on over to Ohio Media Watch’s site to hear a recording of the on-air transition, including the last few minutes of rock music on Cleveland’s Sound.

  1. This totally sucks! I loved this station and it was pretty much all I listened to in the car…..changing stations. I’m done….

  2. Yeah and its bullshit. Cleveland finally got a decent radio station that played a great variety of music and they throw it away. Idiots.

  3. What you guys (and by “you guys” I mean the morons that sold the station) did to this station is criminal. I’m sorry, but sometimes you need music to soothe your soul- and in our town, if you haven’t noticed, we need a lot of soothing. Why do you ask? Oh… yeah… we have a corrupt city council, a city in poverty (and now $120 million more, mind you), a Browns team and stadium that is better off IN the lake, an NBA team whose GM is the epitome of idiocy and who sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, and now no good radio. I love this city- and I hate that I love it because I am always seething and upset for some stupid reason or another. The worst part is, no matter where I go, my loyalty will always be to this city…. like a ball and chain. So once again, thank you for giving us a LATIN RADIO station. Guess what? There is Latin radio in Mexico! You want to hear a bunch of Spanish gibberish, cross the border and ENJOY. I hope for all our sake, we catch a break soon, Cleveland. I really do.

  4. In the fragmented market that is now FM radio, “specialty” stations will become more of the norm. A few years ago, who would have believed that a sports-talk format could deliver quality numbers on FM radio?

  5. This (la) Mega SUCKS! Loved all the DJs and the music on 87.7!! All of the radios in my house were set to it, and never changed in the past year. I hope the new format costs the precious investors millions! Worst decision since we lost 107.9 The End!

  6. Ignorant people need a wake up call….Latinos are the lead minority, why not have our own station? Our nation (America) was built by immigrants…all who came from various places in the world to find freedom and equality, however it seems like ignorance at times cannot be overcome. Latina and Proud!

  7. Please don’t make this about race or culture, because it’s not. People aren’t upset that it changed to a Spanish-language channel; they’re upset because it changed… period. This was one of the few stations not owned by the media conglomerates, and played a wonderful variety of music, including local bands. Everyone should be sad to see it go.

  8. ” Guess what? There is Latin radio in Mexico! You want to hear a bunch of Spanish gibberish, cross the border and ENJOY.”

Yeah, nothing at all to do with race.

  9. It totally sucks. It was the only decent music station in Cleveland…great variety, songs u don’t hear much. The other rock stations here blow, they play the same tired crap over and over. WMMS plays “Paradise City”, “We are the Champions”, “Walk this Way”, and “U shook me all Night Long” in a loop I think. And 98.5 does that with “Another Brick in the Wall”, “Sweet Home Alabama”, and “Hotel California”. Arent people here sick of these songs????

  10. Some of the naive comments on this board border on laughable.

    1) Cleveland Sound 87.7 reportedly has been losing hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past year or so. Their ratings were microscopic, therefore the ad dollars to support it were not there.

    2) In the region, you can hear alternative rock on 99X (99.1)/WMMS HD-2, plus all day on WBWC (88.3), WJCU (88.7) as well as further out on Akrons WAPS (91.3) and WSTB (88.9).
There is virtually NO Spanish station in metro Cleveland, home of a reported 70,000+ Hispanics. This was a smart move. They are already reportedly getting great advertizing support, far more than “Cleveland Sound” was able to get in months.

Note: To Eric Bulter, who posted: “Guess what? There is Latin radio in Mexico! You want to hear a bunch of Spanish gibberish, cross the border and ENJOY.”, you win the prize for the dumbest post on this board.

  11. I will say this I am proud to hear I can listen to my Spanish music for years we never had a Spanish music radio now we do.
