It was a high-energy show from the start at the Grog Shop last night with Starfucker headlining. A younger crowd staggered in slowly to the late-starting concert, welcomed by the Nude Acid American Revolution Band, which established the tone by playing a brief set of sour-tuned rock & roll before smashing a guitar onstage.
HotChaCha singer Jovana Batkovic threw herself into the crowd during their art-punk set, flirted with the young boys, and showered the crowd with beer. And the indie-rap trio Champagne Champagne made sure everyone got their hands in the air.
Electro-pop outfit Starfucker, made up of five multi-instrumentalists, took the stage amid a yard sale of gear and broke straight into it for a ready-to-dance audience.
Fans had the highest energy by the fourth song “Laadeedaa,” knocking around the dance floor to the cleanly layered, up-tempo track.
The solid four-on-the-floor, with a backbeat present in most songs, kept people in perpetual motion and dropping from the rafters on newer tunes like “Julius” and the super catchy “Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second.”
The band’s set blew by. The condensed electronic pop flows easily from one song to the next, gliding on the silky, four-part vocals. And the band doesn’t stop to chat. Except for bassist Shawn Glassford’s plea to the crowd to be safe when lunging around, they were all music. —Adam Burroughs
