Citizens Bank, the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization and city councilman Matt Zone have teamed up to embrace a national movement today in Detroit Shoreway’s EcoVillage: tiny houses.
That’s right, the three have partnered to create Cleveland’s first Tiny House, a 600 square foot home complete with two bedrooms and a kitchen to promote the utilization of small space.
Live construction kicks off today at 10:30 a.m. on West 58th Street and Pear Avenue. If you’re in the area, stop by to check it out.

Obviously, the builder has not experienced a CLE winter. Those walls are mighty thin.
How is 600sq ft small? That’s the size of a 1 bedroom apt. Plus, there are 2-story houses with only 900 sq ft which automatically gives this how a larger footprint. Now, cut it down to 300-400 sq ft….then you have a tiny house.
I just watched a show about this tiny home “movement” and was laughing so hard I was crying! These people were “joining the movement” and looking at houses that were around 900 sq ft and priced around $300,000!!! The house I live in is 750 sq ft and I can assure you it didn’t even cost a third of that. I must have joined the “movement” years ago and didn’t even know it….all this time I thought I was just poor, I didn’t know I was an activist. People are so dumb…
sorry folks but the fact that the average size home in America is now 2,500 sq.ft. I applaud Cleveland’s efforts at trying to get people to start thinking smaller. Yes, if you really want to go tiny then you’re talking 250-300 sq.ft. but Rome wasn’t built in a day and people’s way of thinking isn’t going to change over night, but this is a start and I applaud Cleveland for jumping on the band wagon way ahead of other parts of the country. I currently live in the most congested county in Central Florida and the trend here is to tear down smaller, older homes and put up McMansions because without a state income tax Florida has to depend on property taxes for the bulk of it’s revenue, so the bigger the house, the bigger the tax bill. So kudos to Cleveland, may this be the beginning of a beautiful, tiny relationship.
I am from Cleveland and live in SW Florida, but I plan on moving back next year. I watch these tiny house shows. I believe under 900 sq ft they consider a tiny house. I am handicapped and I now live in a 1200 sq ft house. I find it hard to keep up with and would love love a tiny house. I think that is great that Cleveland is building tiny houses. I would love to have a tiny house. I hope that they are helping the people get loan. I know that a lot of people don’t have good credit. They need to help people get loans. Example I know some one who has bad credit because of divorce and then someone stole her identity theft at Experian. She pays her utility bills and has never been late on her rent. That is someone who they should give a loan to. It would not be for much since the houses are not real expensive. Dont you agree that she deserves a chance?
