Cuyahoga County Council members are expected to vote on the formation of a new Consumer Affairs Department at today’s meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Justice Center.

The idea behind the legislation is to assist local residents in combating investment and credit fraud, while raising awareness of those issues and providing resources for those in need. Sponsors include council members Dan Brady, Michael Gallagher, Dale Miller, Ellen Connally, Chuck Germana, Julian Rogers, Pernel Jones Jr., Sunny Simon and County Executive Ed FitzGerald.
With an annual cost of $200,000, the department would act as the go-to source for consumer fraud information and response. The Ohio Attorney General’s office currently performs similar duties via its Consumer Protection section.
The new department would also oversee the county’s weights and measures inspections.

If the state office is really backlogged, then this would be a great idea. If not, then why spend $200,000 we don’t have for something that someone else is already doing for free?
