On Saturday, April 13, The Cleveland Flea kicks off the first of a new series of events that will take place every second Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Billed as part urban treasure hunt, part culinary adventure, and part maker center, the event is filled with all matter of creative pursuits.

In addition to goods from 50 or so vendors up for sale, there will be culinary workshops hosted by Rising Star Coffee on crafting a wonderful cup of coffee using different brew methods. Paul Benner from the Cleveland Brew Shop will demonstrate how to brew beer using a one-gallon set up — and how to impart delicious coffee flavors into home brew.

“Partnering with Rising Star is a no-brainer because they produce a local, high quality product and are all about interacting with their customers in unique ways, just as we are at The Brew Shop,” says Brenner.

The two also have collaborated on a one-gallon home brew kit that will include Rising Star Coffee as a prominent ingredient. “Rising Star Stout” will be available for sale for the first time at The Cleveland Flea and Cleveland Brew Shop following the event.

“Coffee is a fun ingredient to use in home brew beers because there are multiple ways to get that rich coffee flavor into your brew,” adds Brenner. We couldn’t agree more. While most of the Flea is free, this is a paid/ticketed event ($20) that will include free coffee and demonstrations on coffee and beer.

At 2 p.m. the guys from Cleveland Whiskey will give a behind-the-scenes look at their process of aging their Black Bourbon, followed by a whiskey challenge that pits their spirit up against a competitor. Following that is a cocktail class led by Mike Gulley, who will demonstrate how to make a proper Old Fashioned using Cleveland Whiskey.

  1. As it should be….Free is good but I’m no penny pincher when it comes to fun and 20 bucks ain’t gonna break me….

  2. That sounds good to me, I’d be willing to give it a try for $20. I figure, what the heck, see how it goes. It’s a new event in the area, so why not?
