Update: The organizers of Dyngus Day Cleveland, a Polish celebration that takes place each year here on the day after Easter, have announced that this year’s event has been postponed due to coronavirus concerns.

“As health officials share more information regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Board of Directors for Dyngus Day Cleveland understands the importance of keeping our community informed and safe,” reads a press release announcing the postponement. “We realize the situation is evolving rapidly and appreciate your flexibility as we navigate. The well-being of our community and partners is our highest priority, and we have been in constant communication with the City of Cleveland and health officials.”

Organizers hope to reschedule the event at a later date in 2020.

Original Post 3/2/2020: Monday, April 13, will mark the 10th anniversary of Dyngus Day Cleveland, and organizers expect 60,000 people to attend this year’s event.

Per usual, Dyngus Day Cleveland will feature parades, Polish dancing, pageants, paczki and piwo.

The celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. in Gordon Square, and organizers have just announced the day’s schedule of events.

DJ Kishka will serve as the host of the daylong celebration, and Sibling Revelry Brewing will brew up a special Dyngus Day Piwo, a custom beer created exclusively for the festivities. There will be local artisans with curated merchandise, and one lucky woman will be crowned the Polish Queen in the Miss Dyngus Day Pageant.

There will be free rides on Lolly the Trolley throughout town, and new features this year include an Amateur Accordion Contest judged by a panel of polka professionals and a Polish Wedding.

  1. I am Polish and from Cleveland and we have been celebrating Dyngus day since 1960, You are so far off on this!!

  2. I am also Polish. Dads cousin would come over the day after Easter and spill water on moms head. He would say Dyngus Dyngus! We always thought it was a made up holiday. The first time I was in Poland I was teaching ENGLISH to high school age students in Krakow. After the course was over I admitted I was Polish (moms side of the family). I told them about dads cousin. They said to me Oh, you mean Smyngus Dyngus Day? They showed it to me in a Polish encyclopedia! I told all my siblings it was all TRUE! I now Celebrate Dyngus Day every Easter Monday! I have been at every Dyngus Day celebration since the first one at Parkside. You will see me there again this year.
