City Manager Eric Wobser, who was formerly the executive director of Ohio City Inc., said that Sandusky made the move for two reasons: 1) to prioritize voting among city personnel; and 2) in recognition that other cities have eliminated Columbus Day due to its controversial origins.
The change will take effect this year.
Sandusky is a city of roughly 25,000 and is located about one hour west of Cleveland on the shores of Lake Erie.
Other Ohio cities — nudge nudge: CLEVELAND — should consider making election day a paid holiday to encourage voter participation.

Oh boy. I bet Sam is jumping for joy on such a memorable occasion. I just feel the chains of oppression dropping off in Sandusky.
Sam, how do we get rid of you now, you pathetic loser?
Dear Eatit,
Stop being so mean to Sam, please. It’s not funny and it’s definitely not cool.
It’s also cowardly to make such posts anonymously,
I dont know what to say…but stick it up your kazooski we in Little Italy will be celebrating Columbus Day…you all want to tell me what Washington and Lincoln and all the Presidents in between did to the American Indians… I dont need a history lesson to see the writing on the wall you all want to take away the only day that Italian Americans celebrate positively to their heritage… you all make me sick to my stomach with all your information about what happened over 500 years ago and you dont have any idea what happened 50 years ago to our president Kennedy! “City Commission meetings are held in the City Building at 222 Meigs Street in the first floor conference room on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 5 p.m. (If a holiday falls on a Monday, the meeting moves to the next day.)”
Does Cleveland do the same thing? When a holiday is on a Monday does their charter let them meet on Tuesday?
Social justice warriors and virtue signallers falling for the Marxist white guilt.
Christopher Columbus did nothing wrong.
Great idea. Cities, counties and states around the country should make election day a paid day off. I don’t know that most cities have Columbus Day as a paid holiday anyway (Cleveland does; Cleveland Heights doesn’t). The only problem I see is that moving another paid holiday to November would make a lot of holidays in that one month: election day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and for many, the day after Thanksgiving.
If anyone thinks politicians want more people to vote, the joke is on you.
This is great, it relfects the raising awareness US citizens have to the dispicable atrocities that Columbus had his men committed to the Native Peoples..
I suggest to those that are not aware to do some research on this subject.. Howard Zinn’s ” the people’s history of the Unitied States is a good place to begin…
Did the Italian-Americans finally derail the movement to SHARE Columbus Day with Native Americans? Has that idea been dropped for good? It was going to be called Indigent…er…Indignant…um…Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Yeah, that was it. How come we never hear anything about that anymore? Worked for me.
