Before all the Hot Stove League talk of a budding Cleveland-Cubs rivalry, there was the Cleveland Cubs. In 1931, the Negro National League was facing dire financial straits due to the Great Depression. Hoping to become a needed monetary anchor in a larger market, Nashville Elite Giants owner Tom Wilson relocated his club to Cleveland, which had been home to six previous league franchises (Buckeyes, Tate Stars, Browns, Elites, Hornets, Tigers).
