Cavs CEO Len Komorowski this morning appeared before the Cleveland Planning Commission to publicly share the proposed replacement for the LeBron banner on the side of the Sherwin Williams building.

It is dumb, but that didn’t stop the commission from roundly applauding and approving the design, which features a closeup of one of the Guardian statues along with the phrase “All for the Land,” and a script Cleveland logo.

The actual Guardian statues themselves are just a few blocks away, it should be noted, which didn’t stop the braintrust from thinking that people would want to look at a picture of what they can see in person instead.

Thousands of crowd-sourced photos from Clevelanders and Cavs fans will make up the mosaic image of the Guardian in the final product, Komorowski told the assembled crew of unimaginative officials. (More info on how to submit photos to this monstrosity here, if you’re interested.)

“God bless the guitar,” quipped councilman Kerry McCormack during the meeting, “but I’m glad we’re getting away from it.”

Judging by initial reactions on social media, no one outside of the room is a fan of the idea. “They managed to come up with something worse than a blank wall,” wrote one observer who speaks for us all.

  1. I personally like it. It says that Cleveland is made up of more than just a sports superstar. Cleveland has not come me as far as it has and is driven by more than just its sports.

  2. Why not just a blank wall until somebody comes up with a better idea than this POS?
Maybe waiting until the Tribe or the Browns do something big…how about that?
Is there a law that the space needs covering? Give it a rest for a while and leave it empty.

  3. Anything is better than having to look at the egomaniac James and that Amish chin strap. Way to bolt town after getting swept…LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. How about calling it a day by having a giant picture of Frank Jackson or Armond Budish? Or confuse the heck out of people with a giant picture of a farm animal from one of the urban farms?

  5. This is about as visionless as our political leadership, but hey, at least it’s not a fucking guitar!

  6. Since it’s a picture of one of the guardians of the Hope Memorial Bridge, why not just a picture of Bob Hope? Not that anyone under 40 would recognize him, but he was the mid20th Century’s most popular comedian. Why just a hint of a joke when we can have a real jokester?

  7. Dan Gilbert’s slimy goon Len Komoroski selling the local compliant mouth-breathers a giant mugshot of the guardian of traffic for the side of a building. Wow. Just wow. Will it also be encased in glass?

  8. I just can’t take a ‘reporter’ seriously who stuffs so much biased, personal language into a story. I don’t give a fuck about your opinion, Vince. Save this bullshit, half-assed writing for your facebook status, and focus on being a respectable journalist, if that’s even what you’re considered.

I honestly don’t care either way about the banner, but had to stop by and beg Scene to care a little more about the writing they put out.

  9. Annoyed Reader:

Putting “DUMB” in front of “replacement” turned this “news item” into an op-ed piece or an editorial,
That headline would not be allowed fly in most publications. But the writer is also the Editor-in-Chief.
So it not only flies, but the TSA looks the other way when the bags go through.

Are you shocked? Or surprised? Seriously? You shouldn’t be. This sort of thing is not new.
Not only does it happen quite frequently, but it’s been happening for quite a while now.

    Get used to it.
