Before that, though, we’d like to share a sample of physicians’ public comments on the licensing draft rules. (Physicians will need to go through an as-yet-unconfirmed process to be certified to recommend the use of medical marijuana.)
Columbus Business First pointed out last month that fewer than three in 10 physicians are interested in obtaining the license necessary to recommend medical marijuana for their patients. In fact, interest seems to be decreasing ahead of implementation of the law.
As a reminder, qualifying conditions in Ohio include: AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy or another seizure disorder, fibromyalgia, glaucoma, hepatitis C, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, pain that is either chronic and severe or intractable, Parkinson’s disease, positive status for HIV, post-traumatic stress disorder, sickle cell anemia, spinal cord disease or injury, Tourette’s syndrome, traumatic brain injury and ulcerative colitis.
Below, we’ve compiled a list of public comments sent to the state medical board, collected via a public records request, that show physicians opposing the draft rules and the roll-out of HB 523. There are legitimate points, surely, that reflect the in-flux nature of this medical marijuana program and the evolving field of diagnostic research in the U.S. (to say nothing of federal prohibition), but other comments reflect an absolutist head-in-the-sand stance that isn’t helping anyone. (sic) throughout.
“Why discriminate against fellow Ohioans who live without this goofy list of diagnoses? Thanks, but no thanks. I will not be whoring out my medical license to recommend pot.”
“I am not going to prescribe this no matter what the rules are”
“I know two people who developed schizophrenia after taking marijuana. I am unwilling to risk that.”
“I really don’t want any further pain management patients in my practice”
“I worry that we do not have enough data on the safest prescribing practices for medical marijuana”

After much searching (please Google it yourself), by overwhelming scientific facts, research and studies, I learned cannabis can help – or cure – many, many conditions, and is particularly effective for pain, with zero chance of overdose. Zero.

It seems like a lot of people are claiming they want marijuana for pain relief, nausea relief or because they read a blog that said it can treat X, Y and Z disease or they watched a YouTube video of a kid who stop seizing when they were giving sublingual THC drops.
Medicine and the development of prescription drugs takes years and developing treatments for certain conditions requires extensive scientific double blind studies. They observe the test subjects for years to see if they develop any undersirable side effects for YEARS. This testing has not been done for marijuana. You cannot state that marijuana is an adequate medical treatment for the countless conditions it is said to “treat” without adequate testing. Hearsay, reading a blog, listening to your stoner cousin and YouTube videos is not adequate testing
In addition, if somebody really suffers from these conditions, there are many drugs designed specifically to cure or ameliorate symptoms with little to no known side effects.
I don’t understand when people looking for marijuana cards say “pot cures seizures and it’s all natural” when they have never had a seizure in their life. In addition, there are cannibis derivative drugs that are ALREADY on the market for medical purposes that don’t provide the high that are routently prescribed by physicians. If you’re having “chronic pain” why can’t you just use those?

My fibromyalgia began with stabbing pains in my hip that jolted me awake one summer night seven years ago. It’s USUALLY controlled by Lyrica but when it’s not, I can’t live my life as a productive person. I wish something could control the pain but over-the–counter meds don’t and my doc won’t prescribe opioids–not that I’d want to take them, although it’s possible that a couple of pills could do the trick. Maybe marijuana could help people like me who would never have chosen this disease for themselves.
Yeah well began 1999 & 2002 after 2 screwed up back surgeries and supply of morphine to fix the ache and chronic pain of my back and hip when they fused my back up with a piece of hip, 4 screws, 2 rods, 2connection plates after chart stated ABNORMAL AORTA FOR PERSON OF THIS AGE, a month after dr putting all this equipment in my spine because the 1st surgeon took herniated disc out stating ” this is the problem that your thighs are burning”…13 months later had ONE more test done, had a AORTOBIFEMORAL BYPASS, hose from heart to both legs, what MY chart stated in first place… I was the first round taken off of pain pills. They didn’t care HOW I was put in pain, just that they needed me off of the pain pills that I got around with because I was SURGICALLY SCREWED UP, but that I was taken off of them like I wasn’t in any pain at all….Then 8 yrs later was told by same family dr that I needed a hernia operation…since I hadn’t been to hospital, except to fix my hoses, aortas, but always healed and was good because when they took me off morphine I started smoking pot, nothing new to me did it all the time anyway, I found that it took my mind off the pain of my spine. I then in 2010 said ok to hernia surgery, was never told that this type of mesh would end up killing me or hurting me so bad that I wanted to die at 45, the day it was put in, called physiomesh by Ethicon a J & J company. I still cry for everything I went thru with this from when I woke up post op in so much pain and asked the dr “What the hell did you do to me” was first words out of my mouth. Went back to ER before 2 weeks, even before my follow up visit to dr, after 4 days with 102-03 fever, chills, and got sent home because ER dr talked to my dr and was told that I had office visit next day send me home after antibiotic IV, so I can make office visit….. in so much pain for almost 2 weeks, thank god for pot because I was only given enough pain pills for a week, even though the dr knew what type of pain I was in when I woke up and everyday that I spent in hospital. I was in surgery Nov 5, 2010 for removal of this mesh, and abdominal muscles, nerves, belly button, and any and all things that touched this mesh, a nerf football sized piece of me went with it…..was told when I woke up after that surgery by dr that did both surgeries ” I tried to debride the mesh to use it again but couldn’t”, he didn’t tell me at the time that he took everything that he did…. I have been in so much pain, 24/7, I have learned to use pot. I control the chronic pain, the depression, anxiety, and sleep problems I have. I use the plant because of the THC, might get others high, don’t know what that is, it works the fastest to forget about the pain, and I’M NOT AFRAID OF THE SIDE EFFECTS NOR GETTING HOOKED. My dr can’t believe that this alone works for me. He has even asked me if I needed something else for what I’m going thru and I tell him no. I will not obey Ohio law because they don’t want people to have the THC only the oil.
