East Cleveland, which boasts local economic woes documented at length here and elsewhere, owes a Rhode Island traffic camera company $638,000 on a bill that’s built up for years, the AP reports. 

Anyone driving through the inner-ring suburb can attest to the fact that traffic cameras litter the city’s main streets. City Council members referred to the cameras earlier this year as major sources of revenue, contrasting them sharply against the city’s dwindling tax base.

Calls placed by Scene to the city’s law office — to ascertain literally anything about this alarming turn of events for East Cleveland — were not answered Wednesday afternoon.

The law director for East Cleveland said Wednesday the judge would not allow him to represent the city in the lawsuit. Ronald Riley says East Cleveland couldn’t afford to hire outside counsel and won’t be able to pay the judgment.

  4. I got a ticket and the time on the ticket I was no where near east cleveland, How is that possible, I was with a lawyer? The cameras are off, or something, yes it was my car, but I don’t know why the camera date and time said I was there. I need help? said I didn’t stop but on my photo you can see my break lights.

  5. Democrats in charge. That’s what usually happens. How is it that every time when a city or a county goes bankrupt there is no mentioning that DEMOCRATS ran the place for decades.

  6. ^ There are not many republican run cities in the first place, so your sample is skewed. Also, you fail to note all of the many the successful democratically run cities.
