Cleveland City Councilman Joe “Development, Development!” Cimperman is really into closing down dubious night clubs these days.

He was tangentially successful with Lounge 75, which was the site of a murderous shooting last month. Cimperman publicly vowed to strip the joint of its liquor license, but landlord Dan Dzina stepped in and just shut the whole mess down. It’s probably for the best, and it’s probably a more appropriate source for closure.

Next up: Tops and Bottoms, according to 19 Action News’ report.

“Because we want people to know with all the investment happening downtown, the casino, and everything else, that people are safe and that we are committed to keeping downtown a safe place to visit,” Cimperman told the news station. It’s worth noting that his little Gilbertian slip – “the casino” – doesn’t seem to contrast too well against the self-made backdrop of seedy downtown clubs. Ho hum.

But the purview expands further, as Cimperman continues to ramble to whomever will listen. He wants Tomo shut down “because of questions about music and an overall operating agreement.” He wants Anatomy shut down following a major fight earlier this year.

  1. It’s funny, I just heard him on 1100 the other day, championing musicians and the like, but isn’t this the same guy who doesn’t want live music played in clubs???? I can’t stand Simpleton…..I mean Chimp-or-man…..

  2. Pimperman err I mean Cimperman was horrible as a Councilman when he ran the ward in the Asian Town District. He catered to the poodle crowd, the muckety mucks with the big money and could give two shits about you unless you lived in Tremont. So since his departure I see he’s still doing the same thing he always did, SUCKING THE ASS OF THE RICH AND SHAMELESS. I feel what he wants to do is turn every club downtown into a yuppie hang out just like Tremont

  3. What makes Tremont a “yuppie” hangout again? Just because they have nice restaurants and the bars attract white folks? The people who frequent those bars are typically the artsy, hipster and blue collar. Good riddance to these trash clubs. Attract garbage in, you’re gonna get garbage out. Pretty simple formula that proves itself true time and time again with bars.

  4. I’m not going to mourn the loss of another club where bad sound systems and that groping that passes for dancing is the norm. What drives me absolutely insane about Cleveland and our esteemed leadership’s inability to support nightlife is the absolute lack of a real dance club. And afterhours? Forget about it. When was the last time you could dance in this town past 2:30? I can only look at the DJ lineups in cities like LA, New York, Denver, San Fran, Miami — and Detroit and Pittsburgh for that matter — so I don’t even want to hear that it’s about being a big metropolitan area with $$ — and wince that we have nothing similar here. Does the name “Funktion One” resonate with any of you? what about “Dynacord?” Pathetic. I know lots of people who would love to open a proper club for house / techno / trance / drum and bass / trip hop, but don’t out of fear that Clevelanders wouldn’t pay a cover charge, the city wouldn’t support them, and it would have to go the way of trashy crowds just to fill the place. Keep it classy, Cleveland. Keep it classy.

  5. Ok , I tried twice to post a response and it won’t let me, censorship?? But yet this goes through???

  6. It’s ironic, he is shutting down clubs, but is allowing an owner of a hip hop club in west 6th to open the old barroom spot right next door to the casino to open as a large club.. So lets shut down all the clubs doing hip hop so they funnel all the people that frequented those spots to this large club next door. Brilliant! Way to go joe!
