After months of the kind of familiar push-and-pull that happens when a struggling club tries to restart its flat-lined business with a game plan that grinds against the neighborhood’s wishes, one Cleveland Heights club has been ordered to close its doors for good.
MYXX, located in the Cedar-Fairmount area, must cease operation by October 1st, according to judgment rubber-stamped by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Daniel Gaul this month. Until that time, the club is operating under shorter hours, according to Cleveland Patch, which has gone a good job tracking the MYXX saga, a conflict that not only pitted the establishment against the neighborhood but eventually against city hall.
The club is located in the old Jillian’s spot. After the grimy pool hall closed up over a year ago, the building’s owner doubled the space, tricked the footage out in a chic décor, and dubbed the new concoction MYXX. Business was slow for quiet awhile.

So the thugs just keep streaming downtown then….Right?
Thats such a shame i live in cleveland hts and im 36yr old thats just being racist you dont want african american people to go a bar in they own neighborhod!!!
Wtf? Young and African American??!!! I know plenty of people of color who stay in that area. Gtfoh. It’s not always our fault. That’s simple minded of the author to right such garbage.
In today’s USA there seems to be a back-wards step or two pertaining to the social problem of racisim. The politics of the end of 2012 are polarizing our groups into what is considered conservative or liberal. The conservatives hate most liberals, and the liberals hate most conservatives. No one really knows what these labels mean so far as day to day behavior is considered, but they both are quite certain that the other type sucks and needs to shut their fucking pie-holes.
It is apparent to us social scientists and arm-chair preachers that we are at a point of critical mass. For my needs I define critical mass as mostly confusing and chaotic on a social behavior level, filled with more emotion than reason, and volitile and ready to explode…like bottles of nitro on the back of a covered wagon as it goes down a bumpy road.
This article implies the neighborhood is racist, which would be news to me. Notice how the article downplays the nature of the nuisances: “Cleveland Heights police were soon regulars at the club due to noise complaints and reports of underage drinking. In one incident a fight broke out on the premises; in the subsequent confusion, a Cleveland Heights cop was hit by a car.”
That one incident of a worse nature was not an isolated incident. Sometimes a dozen police officers had to deal with the club. I doubt the neighbors hate people because of the color of their skin — it’s a diverse neighborhood and proudly so. What they probably don’t like is all the public urination, littered liquor bottles, riots, fights, assaults, and – among the noise complaints – the sound of gun shots. And I doubt they like a stupid club requiring so many police officers to babysit it when those officers are needed elsewhere. And I doubt they like a a selfish club owner who didn’t take steps to correct the situation when she knew it was a problem.
If the Scene writer really believes that Cleveland Heights neighborhood is an unwelcoming place to people of certain skin colors, let’s see him try and prove it. If not, I think it’s the writer who is racist for believing that what has gone on at at this club is representative of young black people generally. What I think was going on is a club owner who was running a bad operation and didn’t care, and that the club was attracting a subculture of people of various skin colors who feel they are entitled to violate the rights of others whenever they feel like it. Why on earth should they continue to be welcome in the neighborhood?
How is the writer simple-minded? It’s not the writers fault that the people disrupting the community are African-American.
Kenny, I agree, where we are heading as far as racism goes is not a good place. We seem to have taken many, many steps backwards, and both whites and blacks seem more than happy to draw their lines in the sand and try to alienate the other side. I know that most people as a whole get along and do not see skin color, but there are some very, very loud voices on each side that are making things extremely messy.
Everyone missed the whole point! You don’t see Caucasian people at bars acting like complete idiots!!! It’s more so always younger black generation no one is being racist! It is what it is. It’s sad that as African Amercians we are labeled wrongly all our lives especially black males…. but when things like this happens at not just this club but all clubs in the city it just makes us look like a bunch of ignorant asses!
As the Mayor said, this is not Detroit. We still have many nice neighborhoods in the Heights, but that will not be true if the socioeconomic makeup continues to decline, regardless of race. And it will decline with establishments like MYXX.
I am impressed by the ideas expressed on this (blog?) by several commenters. Communication is the way we find truth and illusions in culture/life. When an idea is brought to the light of reason and debate and communication, only truth can remain and the illusions must be washed away. Adam said, ‘most people get along’ and I believe this and try to work for the goal of helping more people ‘get along’ and help one another, rather than to attack each other. But then we are a very violent and angry species and we are smart as hell and know how to make powerful weapons to beat our competitors out of our perceived resources. Know this my fellow Clevelanders: Fresh water will one day soon be more valuable than oil and the Great Lakes has 20% of the planet’s surface-fresh water. We have had ‘water on the brain’ here through the industrial revolution and beyond and before, and the mighty Lake Erie will rise again as one of the worlds most productive water sources in the world….God Bless America and pass the amunition, Brothers and Sisters All.
The club is a beautiful place on the wrong side of town. The area has a somewhat diverse population but that area of Cleveland Heights is not welcoming to a business that attracts the code word black (urban crowd). If it was on the S.taylor side where many of the code word black (urban crowd) hang out it would be more accepted. if the Johannesburg oops! Cleveland Heights police spent as much time at other bars the results would be the same. They had their eyes set on this spot when the shade of the patrons became unacceptable to the area.
