Update: The city of Lakewood has announced that its brand new Starbucks, the first to open in the city, is set to welcome customers for the first time Friday.

The new coffee shop will employ about 20 people to help serve up its caffeinated concoctions.

(Original Story: 2/7/2019) Starbucks — known for its controversial cup designs, a former CEO considering a presidential run, and, to a lesser extent, its coffee — has announced plans to open its first Lakewood location.

The Seattle-based coffee behemoth plans to occupy 15027 Detroit Ave., a former Burger King that thankfully does include a drive-through window.

“Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers,” a Starbucks spokesperson told cleveland.com, confirming the location is opening this summer.

Unfortunately, that means Lakewood residents might have to travel upwards of several blocks (to Cleveland, which already has 17 Starbucks locations, including one at Clifton and W. 117th) to obtain a seasonal Cherry Mocha for Valentine’s Day.

In the meantime, there are plenty of local spots to keep you caffeinated in the Cleveland area, as this list proves.

  1. Typo: You said “as this list proves” instead of “as this slideshow might prove if anybody was willing to suffer through it”.

  2. This will be as exciting as hearing in 15 years that Cleveland got an IKEA.

If this were 1990, this might be news. Or hearing that theres something other than brown water in a coffee cup served with fake creamer on the west side…that would be news.

  3. Why go to Starbucks?

You have Black Bird Caf and The Root on Detroit Ave

Goodkind Coffee, Rising Star, and Addicted Coffee.

  4. Meh…I never got sucked into that pretentious Starbucks bullshit…I go to places where you can just say “coffee’ without a five-minute description of what KIND of coffee.

Proud to say that I have been in a Starbucks exactly twice in my entire life, and neither time did I even order anything related to coffee.

So will I be ignoring the Lakewood location and never even setting foot inside it? Damn betcha! But I’m glad to see it replaced a Burger King. I don’t bother with that garbage, either.

  5. As shocking as it may sound, some people are actually able to enjoy a cup of coffee from a local cafe AND from Starbucks. I am partial to Black Bird, Erie Island, and 5 Points Coffee, however, I do occasionally enjoy an Americano from Starbucks… when it is convenient. If people like 15 ingredient coffee beverages in cup sizes that have stupid names, so be it. It is always amazing to me how many people “hate” Starbucks when these openings are announced, but somehow those locations always manage to stay busy, no matter now many of them there are.

  6. They will only outsell more coffee than Root or Blackbird because they have an app to pre-order and a drive thru, ain’t nobody got time these days to park car, walk to coffee shop, wait in line, order, chit chat, wait again, grab coffee, go.. with Starbucks it’s a 2 step process- order, go.
